That's a great question! There are four types of roasts you'll see at most cafes, markets, and coffee suppliers: light, medium, medium-dark, and dark roast. Light and medium roasted coffee will taste bright and light - almost like tea. They will have more of the coffee's unique tasting notes - like fruity, floral, or nutty notes. These types of roasts are ideal for high-quality single-origin coffee, like Ethiopian coffee or Colombian. They also make great espresso or cold brew. Medium-dark and dark roast coffee will taste darker, bolder, and more smoky, and they typically come as blends, with coffee from various countries combined. These types of roasts are good if you typically take your coffee with cream and sugar and still want the coffee flavor to come through, or if you like your coffee to taste very bold.
