Nespresso CitiZ Review
Read our Nespresso CitiZ review to find out if it's the coffeemaker you're looking for. Or not.
The first time I tried a Nespresso shot was in 2010, working as a consultant. At the moment, the novelty of the Nespresso system was shocking and stormed the coffee world. Even years later, I had a brunch at one of the finest restaurants in Bogotá, and they were serving Nespresso.
After such a long time in the market, the Nespresso brand has advanced a new experience for coffee lovers at home. Many people still consider these coffeemakers a good balance between sophistication and convenience. Along with fans, Nespresso has acquired some detractors too.
Single serving coffeemakers are completely different from most traditional brewing devices. While reading opposing points of view, you may feel overwhelmed. It used to be easy to choose a coffeemaker, but not anymore.
Still, it’s easy to acknowledge that the Nespresso CitiZ is, to some extent, one of the best Nespresso machines ever. It’s practical, simple, and offers an outstanding balance between functionality and aesthetics. But, it isn’t for everyone.
Many coffee lovers appreciate this machine and use it daily, while others should not buy it.
But, how to know if the Nespresso CitiZ is for you? Well, keep reading below to find out more information about it.
After reading our review, you should be well equipped to make an informed decision.
Overview: Nespresso CitiZ

Nespresso CitiZ is one of the most popular Nespresso machines ever. It offers a convenient coffee brewing experience without any complications.
It’s safe to say that the CitiZ is one of the most practical and space-saving capsule machines on the market. It’s tall and sleek, which makes it appropriate for most countertops. Additionally, it’s easy to prepare more than a dozen espressos without refilling the tank with it!
On the other hand, Nespresso Citiz isn’t for espresso enthusiasts who want to start a beginner setup. Instead, this machine -or any Nespresso- is for more convenience-oriented coffee lovers. It’s practical, fast, and accessible without offering any control over the brewing process.
Nespresso CitiZ Specifications
- 19-bar pump system with clock-work reliability
- A fast heat-up system gets the machine ready in less than a minute
- You can choose between a simple model and one with a built-in Aeroccino 3, the Nespresso milk frothing device
- Foldable drip tray to accommodate different cup sizes
- Espresso and lungo buttons
- Removable 34 oz water tank
What we like
Nespresso’s ability to portray elegance through these simple machines is impressive. In this regard, the CitiZ is one of the most visible models, becoming almost a synonym of how a Nespresso machine looks.
Additionally, the Nespresso CitiZ comes in different colors, and you can choose to have a built-in Aeroccino 3 paying more. In terms of design and functionality, it offers a good balance between capacity, size, and visual appeal.
The mug holder design with a folding tray is an intelligent solution for different cups and serving sizes. Additionally, Nespresso accomplished its best drip tray design with this machine. It prevents coffee from dripping or spouting over the counter.
In terms of energy saving, it offers a programmable auto-off feature which is very convenient. Finally, the CitiZ is compatible with classic Nespresso capsules and third-party capsules labeled as Nespresso compatible.
Nespresso CitiZ Key Features and Benefits
- Appealing design with different colors
- Good balance between capacity and size
- A convenient and adaptable cup holder design
- Well-designed drip tray, better than most Nespresso machines
- Compatible with classic Nespresso capsules and third-party capsules labeled as Nespresso compatible
- Programmable auto-off feature
To consider before buying
Before buying any new piece of coffee equipment gear, it is crucial to look at the downsides. In this regard, as solid as the CitiZ is, it has a few aspects to bear in mind before pulling the trigger.
Lungo and espresso are the only options available, so ristrettos or any other brewing ratio are out of its scope. Some Nespresso machines offer a wider variety of drinks. In this regard, the CitiZ is extremely simple.
Vertuo capsules aren’t compatible with the Nespresso CitiZ. This is hardly an inconvenience, but it’s worth considering it.
Another aspect, which has become an issue for some Nespresso machine owners, is customer service and technical support. Here and there, you can find complaints about the service, which can be more than a nuisance if you’re expecting to use your machine for years to come.
In short, before buying, remember the following:
- Limited drinks capability.
- Not compatible with Vertuo capsules.
- Nespresso’s customer service and technical support don't have the best reputation in the market.
Who is the Nespresso CitiZ coffeemaker for?
Before getting a Nespresso machine, it’s always better to try its coffee. It has a distinctive body, aroma, and taste that aren’t for everybody. The most important thing to consider is this. The CitiZ is a reliable and affordable option if you love Nespresso coffee.
Only second to taste and aroma, convenience is vital for Nespresso CitiZ owners. This machine is simple, easy to use, clean, and maintain. Nothing is complicated about it, and people who enjoy its minimalistic approach will love this machine.
The CitiZ is compatible with third-party capsules, which is a crucial feature for many of its owners. It might not sound like a huge deal, but a lot of people appreciate having a certain degree of experimentation with different tastes and aromas.
In short, the Nespresso Citiz espresso machine is for:
- Coffee lovers who enjoy Nespresso capsules taste and aroma
- People looking for convenience: a fast and easy Nespresso shot
- Nespresso enthusiasts who want to try pods from third-party brands and classic capsules
Who shouldn't buy it?
If you want to learn barista skills and wish to emulate espresso at home, the Nespresso CitiZ isn’t for you. You won’t know anything about dialing an espresso pressing its two buttons, and you have very little control over the brewing process.
Let me be clear. You can’t have this level of reliability, consistency, and usability with the level of control that a barista requires. So, these are hardly defects or shortcomings. The Nespresso CitiZ is simply something different from an espresso machine for beginners.
Another aspect to consider is its milk frother. If you want to prepare cappuccinos and lattes, you’ll need to get the version with the built-in Aeroccino 3. Of course, you can get a more affordable milk frother separately in the market if you wish. Just remember that the CitiZ doesn’t come with a milk frother as a default option.
In short, the Nespresso Citiz espresso machine isn’t for:
- People who want to learn barista skills.
- Espresso enthusiasts who are looking for prosumer gear to start a beginner setup.
How to use the Nespresso CitiZ espresso machine
It’s hard to imagine something easier than brewing a cup of coffee with the CitiZ. First, lift the front handle, put your capsule into place, and shut the lid. Then, press the button for your desired drink: espresso (40 ml) or lungo (110 ml).
You can get capsules for espresso and lungo sizes in various brands and alternatives, from specialty coffee roasters to commercial brands.
Final thoughts
Are you ready to decide now? I hope so!
Buying a new coffee maker isn’t a superfluous decision, and we look forward to helping you find the coffee gear that suits your preferences and expectations.
I want to share with you one final thought before concluding this review. Whenever possible, acquire compostable or recyclable capsules, and dispose of them appropriately. During the first years of Nespresso, its environmental impact was terrible. It still requires taking great care to avoid unnecessary waste when using these machines or any single-serving system.
