The first time I tried a Nespresso shot was in 2010, working as a consultant. At the moment, the novelty of the Nespresso system was shocking and stormed the coffee world. Even years later, I had a brunch at one of the finest restaurants in Bogotá, and they were serving Nespresso.
After such a long time in the market, the Nespresso brand has advanced a new experience for coffee lovers at home. Many people still consider these coffeemakers a good balance between sophistication and convenience. Along with fans, Nespresso has acquired some detractors too.
Single serving coffeemakers are completely different from most traditional brewing devices. While reading opposing points of view, you may feel overwhelmed. It used to be easy to choose a coffeemaker, but not anymore.

Additionally, the Nespresso CitiZ comes in different colors, and you can choose to have a built-in Aeroccino 3 paying more. In terms of design and functionality, it offers a good balance between capacity, size, and visual appeal.
The mug holder design with a folding tray is an intelligent solution for different cups and serving sizes. Additionally, Nespresso accomplished its best drip tray design with this machine. It prevents coffee from dripping or spouting over the counter.
In terms of energy saving, it offers a programmable auto-off feature which is very convenient. Finally, the CitiZ is compatible with classic Nespresso capsules and third-party capsules labeled as Nespresso compatible.

Lungo and espresso are the only options available, so ristrettos or any other brewing ratio are out of its scope. Some Nespresso machines offer a wider variety of drinks. In this regard, the CitiZ is extremely simple.
Vertuo capsules aren’t compatible with the Nespresso CitiZ. This is hardly an inconvenience, but it’s worth considering it.
Another aspect, which has become an issue for some Nespresso machine owners, is customer service and technical support. Here and there, you can find complaints about the service, which can be more than a nuisance if you’re expecting to use your machine for years to come.
In short, before buying, remember the following:

Let me be clear. You can’t have this level of reliability, consistency, and usability with the level of control that a barista requires. So, these are hardly defects or shortcomings. The Nespresso CitiZ is simply something different from an espresso machine for beginners.
Another aspect to consider is its milk frother. If you want to prepare cappuccinos and lattes, you’ll need to get the version with the built-in Aeroccino 3. Of course, you can get a more affordable milk frother separately in the market if you wish. Just remember that the CitiZ doesn’t come with a milk frother as a default option.
In short, the Nespresso Citiz espresso machine isn’t for:
- People who want to learn barista skills.
- Espresso enthusiasts who are looking for prosumer gear to start a beginner setup.
How to use the Nespresso CitiZ espresso machine
It’s hard to imagine something easier than brewing a cup of coffee with the CitiZ. First, lift the front handle, put your capsule into place, and shut the lid. Then, press the button for your desired drink: espresso (40 ml) or lungo (110 ml).
You can get capsules for espresso and lungo sizes in various brands and alternatives, from specialty coffee roasters to commercial brands.
