That’s a great question!
When looking to purchase an at-home milk frother or steamer, it is important to look at a few different qualities including the price point, temperature, and capacity. It is also key to look at your lifestyle and household to determine which frother will best suit your particular needs.
Below is a list of the best at-home frothers based on consumer reviews, personal experience and overall popularity.
Bellman Stovetop Steamer- When I initially heard about this steamer, I was shocked that it isn't more popular among coffee lovers, trying to get the perfect cup at home. This may be due to the fact that it is not electric and does require some minimal labor on behalf of the user. However, this was by far the most recommended steamer among coffee aficionados. What I love about this steamer is that it can be used on gas or electric stove tops, which also makes it portable (great for those who like to go camping). It produces an exceptional, creamy and silky milk but it does take a bit longer to heat up than electric frothers. This steamer delivers when it comes to the quality of milk and froth it produces, as well as its durability. Another plus? You are able to adjust the temperature to your liking.
Breville Milk Cafe Electric Frother- I have many friends and family that own this frother and among online reviews, it is one of the most beloved electric milk frothers. It can handle large amounts of milk (capacity of 700 ml), which makes it a great option for larger households. On the other hand, it requires a minimum of one cup of milk, which may be too large for single person households. The great thing about this electric frother is that you can control the temperature so you can make the milk as cool or hot as you'd like. It is made of stainless steel, so it's very durable and can be put in the dishwasher making it easy to clean.
Bodum Bistro Electric Milk Frother- This frother was one that kept getting mentioned when researching the best at-home milk frothers. It has a nonstick interior that makes it easy to clean, as well as the ability to produce hot or cold foam. It has an auto shut-off feature so there's no need to worry about over-frothing the milk and it has a 400 ml capacity, about one cup. It produces a creamy consistency and thick foam but one thing to mention- some customers have complained its not as durable as other at-home frothers. This may be due to the fact that it is very affordable compared to the other frothers mentioned here and falls on the lower end of the price scale.
Smeg Electric Frother- I have always loved Smeg products because of how aesthetically pleasing they are, not necessarily for their functionality. I was pleasantly surprised to see this electric milk frother getting mentioned in nearly every article and Youtube video about the best at-home frothers. It is similar to the Breville Electric Frother in terms of size and temperature range. It’s dishwasher safe, sturdy and high quality, which also makes it very pricey. It has a milk capacity of 590 ml and there's seven different functions so you can make cold and hot drinks. You also have the ability to add your own mix-ins to make hot chocolate or any type of flavored beverage.
Nespresso Aeroccino 4 Electric Milk Frother - I have been using this milk frother for a while now and I can say it's a great frother if you are only using small amounts of milk, its maximum capacity is 240 ml. It has a cold setting so you can still get the frothy and creamy milk you want in a cold beverage. This electric frother turns off automatically so no need to worry about checking on your milk too often. The one downside to this frother is there's no temperature control, so you aren't able to adjust how hot you want your milk. However, for myself, I find the temperature to be perfect for my personal preferences.
